WHO IS Jason Molina?
Jason Molina is a deeply influential American musician, best known for his work under the monikers Songs: Ohia and later Magnolia Electric Co.
Born: December 30, 1973, in Lorain, Ohio
Died: March 16, 2013, at age 39
His listened to his parents records in their trailer home right on Lake Erie. There is no better way to say it… Jason fell in love with Black Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne was his hero.
Punk rock was next. The Misfits. Sonic Youth. Jason was a founding member and bass player with the Lorain based foursome, The Spineriders. They cut their first recording together in 1990.
He attended Oberlin College in Ohio. Good luck describing his music that came after that. Some call it folk, indie rock, alt-country, americana or even blues. Take your pick! Jason never fit into a box.
Molina’s songs are often described as ghostly, intimate, and mythic, with themes of struggle, solitude, love, work, and perseverance.
They are marked by emotionally raw lyrics, minimalist arrangements, a quality of timelessness, and a haunting vocal delivery.
Albums like "Didn't It Rain" (2002) and "The Magnolia Electric Co." (2003) are often considered to be perfect. True underground classics.
He continues to inspire at least 3 generation of indie musicians with his DIY ethos, prolific output, and deeply personal songwriting.
Perhaps above all, J is admired for his uncompromising vision and lyrical honesty.
Jason Molina remains a cult-like figure in indie rock and alternative country. His songs are still being covered by top tier musicians. Surviving members of Jason’s Magnolia Electric Company are about to tour Jason’s songs with Will Johnson as the front man.
The world lost the magic of Jason far too soon. Or did it?
For one, his legacy continues to grow.
Perhaps he is leaving other evidence behind, as well… YFFIO.
