🎬 JASON MOLINA DOCUMENTARY 🎬

“[It] is a near perfect match to its subject with a do-it-yourself aesthetic, as Molina would have wanted it.”

🔗Gregory Crofton - Channel Nonfiction- Nashville, TN

“[I]t moves with the mercurial, intensely human logic much closer to how we become obsessed with a song than… tally a receipt. That same instinct runs through everything the film does.”

🔗Emily Votaw - WOUB - Athens, OH

“…distill[s] the story of a childhood friend, who became a cult hero, into an accessible tale….”

WHO IS JASON MOLINA?

Jason Molina (1973–2013) is a deeply influential American singer-songwriter from Lorain, Ohio. He is best known for his work as Songs: Ohia, and Magnolia Electric Co., and a treasure trove of solo work. The raw power and poetry of Molina’s lyrics and his emotionally charged voice continues to to find new audiences. He is considered an indie-rock, folk, and alt-country icon across the globe.

You Fuckers Figure It Out: A Jason Molina Story is a Gen X celebration of our lo-fi youth in Rust Belt Ohio, Midwestern work ethic, and Appalachian landscapes that inspired Jason’s singular artistic talent. Family, friends, and his earliest bandmates explore his origin story in Lorain County, Ohio through memory, laughter, and loss in the film.

Raised in a trailer home on the shores of Lake Erie, Jason absorbed his parents’ record collection and fell in love with Black SabbathOzzy Osbourne was his first hero. Jason’s early band Chronic Insanity was pure heavy-metal. Then punk rock as The Spineriders, a still active, Lorain-based foursome, was born. They recorded their first tracks in 1990 at Magnetic North in Cleveland, when the rock star hit an early stride.

At Oberlin College, Songs: Ohia evolved beyond genre and classification. His songs — ghostly, intimate, and mythic — explored history, geography, hard work, and ghosts.

Critics and fans alike hail Didn’t It Rain (2002) and The Magnolia Electric Co. (2003) albums as underground classics. Jason’s minimalist arrangements, haunting vocals, and timeless tone continue to inspire generations of musicians, both young and old.

Jason’s spirit lives on as the original members of Magnolia Electric Company now celebrate his legacy with Will Johnson as Magnolia and Johnson Electric Company - while artists like MJ Lenderman, Dan Spencer Metal, Swearing at Motorists and a dozen more acts reinterpreted Molina’s work in 2025 alone.

Jason Molina remains present among us—in more ways than one. The world lost Jason far too soon — or did it? You Fuckers Figure It Out!
